JAMES BLAKE

James Blake exemplifies the very best of a life in tennis.

Born in New York, James overcame a teenage bout with scoliosis to become a standout tennis player at Harvard University. Success at Harvard propelled him into a professional tennis career that saw him win 10 tournament titles and reach a career-high ranking of world No. 4. As a junior player, James found inspiration from a talk given by Arthur Ashe, and he would follow Ashe’s model, prioritizing representing the United States in international competition. James won both his singles matches in the 2007 Davis Cup Championship, the only U.S. Davis Cup win in the last 30 years. The following year, James defeated Roger Federer en route to the semifinals of the Beijing Olympics.

Post retirement, James has embarked upon a life of giving back. He founded the James Blake Foundation, which has donated over $1M to cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. He served as the USTA Foundation chairperson from 2015-18, currently works as the Tournament Chairman for the Miami Open, and in his spare time provides outstanding tennis coverage as a commentator for ESPN.

James’ enduring dignity remains a vital component of his life story. He’s been unexpectedly forced several times into the limelight as he experienced the effects of racism on the court during a televised match at the 2001 U.S. Open, and off the court in 2015 while standing outside a Manhattan hotel. His 2017 book ‘Ways of Grace: Stories of Activism, Adversity and How Sports Can Bring Us Together’ was inspired by Ashe’s memoir ‘Days of Grace’ and highlights how James’ own personal experiences prompted him to begin collecting tales from other public figures who overcame adversity and strove to unite rather than divide. He has used his platform to speak out against racism and police brutality, while continuing to be a spectacular ambassador for the sport of tennis.
